ENGRAVINGS:
"Iani Aubrij Typis" on title-page above imprint is retained from the first edition (Metz, 1584), as is the privilege on page [95] dated Jan. 8, 1584, granted to Jean Aubry, Boissard's father-in-law. Faber published 12mo editions without illustrations in 1585 and 1587. See Praz.
Letterpress title within engraved architectural border. Portrait of Boissard on page 9 is by Alexandre Vallée; see BN graveurs. Each emblem has a head-piece of printer's ornaments on the left-hand page, followed by the text in French verse. At head of the facing right-hand page is a one-line dedication in Latin, followed by the engraved illustration with Latin motto at top and, as a rule, additional text within the illustration. Landwehr ascribes the illustrations to Theodor de Bry, who published German and Latin editions at Frankfurt in 1593, but in BN Graveurs they are ascribed to Adam Fuchs after drawings by Boissard, and the illustration on page 75 is signed with the monogram AF. Below each illustration are two lines made up of contiguous dashes, followed by the Latin quatrain.
Each of the 42 emblematic illustrations after the first two are numbered to the left of the motto at top. Only even numbers are used; they run from 8 to 86, with the 4 illustrations on pages 65-71 (gathering I⁴) numbered irregularly 58, 64, 62, 60. A second sequence of numbers appears at the lower right of the illustrations, again starting with the third emblem, and running from 5 to 40; some of these numbers are transposed, omitted, or imperfectly effaced.

The 52 emblems of the Proteus, by J. Swelinck after Adriaen van de Venne, are each accompanied by verses in Dutch, Latin and French. Explanations of these emblems are given in the 103 pages of the second part (Sinne-rijcke ende stichtelijcke, leersame redenen).

Plantin's compasses device on title-page. Blocks for the illustrations were mostly cut by Gerard Janssen van Kampen, with a few by Arnaud Nicolai; the illustrations for emblems X and XIX have the letter G for Gerard. Geoffroy Ballain provided 52 of the drawings, Pieter Huys the remainder; see Voet. Headpiece, tailpiece, 2 decorated initials.
Emblems have some iconography in common with those invented by Johannes Sambucus and Alciatus.
This edition does not have the elaborate borders of the first, which had been published the previous year.
CONTENT:
The single page devoted to each of the 58 emblems comprises a brief statement of the topic, in some cases a dedication, the woodcut illustration within a border of fleurons, and a four-line explanation in verse. Additional explanation in prose for each emblem follows on pages 65-121.
Contains a letter to Sambucus.

ILLUSTRATION:
166 emblematic woodcuts followed by 46 coins.
A large number of emblems are dedicated to friends and relations of the author (see Landwehr for an elaborate listing).
Zsámboki originally commissioned the artist Lucas d'Heere for the illustrations. Plantin, however, had half of these designs redrawn by Geoffroy Ballain and Pieter Huys. The actual woodcuts were produced by Gerard Janssen van Kampen, Cornelis Muller, and Arnold Nicolai.
Contains an early illustration of a tennis match.
NOTE:
The first new emblem book to appear outside Italy or France. An expanded version followed in 1566. It was published in French in 1567 and in a Dutch translation.
CONDITION:
Somewhat browned and spotted, heavier in some places, some slight dampstaining mostly confined to lower gutter and margins.
