Consists of 6 parts and an appendix, each with separate pagination. The appendix consists of excerpts from other writers and court cases relating to the subject of marriage, in French and Latin. For detailed description of the parts, cf. De hooggeleerde en zoetvloeiende dichter Jacob Cats / Domien ten Berge. c1979. p. 233-235.

Parts 3-6 comprise parts 1-4 of "Christelick huys-wijf," which has special title on leaf ²A1r: Christelick huys-wijf, vertoont inde gestalte van bruyt, vrouwe, moeder, weduwe, vergheleecken mette vier getijden des iaers, lente, somer, herfst, winter, met by-vouginghe vande mannelicke tegen-plichten op alle de voorgemelde ghelegentheden.
Title on added engraved title-page: Houwelick, dat is, Het gansch beleyt des echten-staets : afgedeylt in ses hooft-stucken, te weten, maeght, vryster, bruyt, vrouwe, moeder, weduwe : behel-sende mede de mannelicke tegen-plichten.

ILLUSTRATION:
166 emblematic woodcuts followed by 46 coins.
A large number of emblems are dedicated to friends and relations of the author (see Landwehr for an elaborate listing).
Zsámboki originally commissioned the artist Lucas d'Heere for the illustrations. Plantin, however, had half of these designs redrawn by Geoffroy Ballain and Pieter Huys. The actual woodcuts were produced by Gerard Janssen van Kampen, Cornelis Muller, and Arnold Nicolai.
Contains an early illustration of a tennis match.
NOTE:
The first new emblem book to appear outside Italy or France. An expanded version followed in 1566. It was published in French in 1567 and in a Dutch translation.
CONDITION:
Somewhat browned and spotted, heavier in some places, some slight dampstaining mostly confined to lower gutter and margins.

Quentel began the printing of Tyndale's translation of the New Testament in Cologne.

CONDITION:
Covers are wanting, but the binding of the textblock is intact. Stitching of the spine intact and visible. Partial headband stitching (green) remains along with some remnants of reinforcing paper which is visible in spine. The initial partial folio shows remnant of cut away pages (paste down pages are now missing, but flyleaves are present). There is light worm damage on interior pages (especially in signatures P-R, 2F-3I, and 3O-3Q). The last section of the book is water damaged and the final signature (4B) is damaged and partially wanting (see collation).
R3-R6 (interior of sig R) is not a full size sheet and deckled edge can be seen ~1cm shorter than standard bottom of the page.

Early speckled calf over pasteboards has a frame of double fillets in blind. Spine has seven compartments and six raised bands. Edges speckled red, later flys.

Missing frontispiece portrait and engraved title page (Gibson no. 171). Boards: loose boards are scratched and chipped, pasteboard showing at corners. Spine is worn and faded.
