ILLUSTRATION:
Plantin's compasses device on title-page. Blocks for the illustrations were mostly cut by Gerard Janssen van Kampen, with a few by Arnaud Nicolai; the illustrations for emblems X and XIX have the letter G for Gerard. Geoffroy Ballain provided 52 of the drawings, Pieter Huys the remainder; see Voet. Headpiece, tailpiece, 2 decorated initials.
Emblems have some iconography in common with those invented by Johannes Sambucus and Alciatus.
This edition does not have the elaborate borders of the first, which had been published the previous year.
CONTENT:
The single page devoted to each of the 58 emblems comprises a brief statement of the topic, in some cases a dedication, the woodcut illustration within a border of fleurons, and a four-line explanation in verse. Additional explanation in prose for each emblem follows on pages 65-121.
Contains a letter to Sambucus.

CONDITION:

Multiple ownership inscriptions on front flyleaf, one crossed out with another inscription written directly underneath. Latest inscription contains the year 1851 or 1857.
Initials "A K N" and year "1582" are stamped into the front cover.
MARGINALIA:
Small amount of Latin marginal notes alongside underlined Greek phrases in the text.
BINDING:
Germany (Wittenberg?), 16th-century blind-stamped alum-tawed pigskin over stacked paper boards. Both covers feature center panels with two Evangelist portraits (Front: Matthew and Mark; Back: Luke and John) bordered by ornamental roll containing floral designs, symbols of Wittenberg and Saxony, and medallions with profile portraits of Protestant leaders (ex. Luther, Melanchthon). Front cover includes compartments above and below central panel, stamped with initials "A K N" and year "1582" respectively. Initials "HR" incorporated in the Evangelist portrait designs. Ornamental panels stamped onto the spine in the space between raised bands.
