BINDING:
Copy in red morocco binding with blindstamping and gold stamping; stamped "Lortic" on inside front cover bottom centre goldstamping.
ILLUSTRATIONS:
The 94 ill. appear one to a page, between the Latin text that is being illustrated at the head, and the French translation by Gilles Corrozet at the foot in the form of a rhymed quatrain. The woodcuts were first used as book illustrations for: Biblia utriusque testamenti iuxta Vulgatam translationem (Lyon : M. and G. Trechsel [for Hugo à Porta], 1538); see Hollstein. Frellon's crab and butterfly device appears on t.p. The four evangelists in medallions on N3v are by another hand. See Mortimer.

CONTENT:
The 1st of 2 eds. of 1547, with the 5th line of title ending in "emenda-" and the first line of the French text on L1r ending in "uices." See Mortimer.
CONDITION:
Copy lacking signature leaves A2 and A3 with the Preface by Corrozet and a Poem to the reader by Nicholas Bourbon.

Volume 2 includes Erasmus' "Julius exclusus e coelis" (p. 123-178) and his unpublished poem satirizing Julius II, "Pasquillus D. Erasmo Roterodamo" (p. 317-324).
BINDING:
Copy bound in fine nineteenth-century English binding of full, straight-grained blue morocco with a large, gilt coat of arms with the slogan "Virtus incendit vires" on both boards; rest of binding elaborately tooled in gold. In slipcase.
