Ambrosii Calepini Dictionarium - 1565

PA2364 .C35 1565 Title Page.JPG

This edition has been significantly amended with words both added and removed. Examples from Italian, French, and Spanish have been added. Alphabetization is by Latin entry, with proper names rendered in small caps and common nouns in standard capitalization. The alphabetical arrangement is less strict here than in the 1565 or 1613 editions, in favour of some topical organization. For example, here canicula (“little dog”) follows canis (“dog”) as a sub-entry, while the other editions have it precede canis by strict alphabetical order. The page is organized in two columns, with groupings of three letters at the head of each which mark the beginning and the end of the column, although often the heading reflects the majority of the column while ignoring the first word or two. Languages within entries are set apart by typography, with Latin set in Roman type, Romance languages set in italics, and Greek in its own type face with Greek characters.

Organization:

Text is in two columns. Column headings mark the three letters that begin words that start the column or which start and end the column if these are not the same. There are some errors (for example on A2v-a3r the columns transition from ABH to ABI. ABI column labelling begins very early). Often the column heading does not reflect the first word or two, but the bulk of the column. Letters begin with decorated capitals. Subsections by the first two letters are marked mid-column (e.g, C ante A).

Entries are alphabetized by Latin. Latin words are set in roman type, Romance languages (Italian, French and Spanish) are set in italics with the names of languages in roman. Greek is set in the Greek alphabet. Proper names are in small capitals with common nouns in larger type face.
