D. Matthaeus Euangelista

Rudolf Gwalther (1519–1586). D. Matthaeus Euangelista. Zürich: Christophorus Froschouerus, 1583–1584.

The binding of this book is unusual in that the inexpensive manuscript waste paper is being used to cover a costly and labour-intensive binding underneath. The sheet music has been wrapped over top of an ornately tooled pig-skin binding, which is still partially visible along the spine. The manuscript page has been rubbed against the surface underneath leaving a faint impression of the original binding visible along the edges.
