Excellente figueren ghesneden vuyten vppersten poëte Ovidius, 1557

This collection of figures drawn from Ovid’s Metamorphoses features 178 woodcuts attributed to Bernard Solomon (1506–1561), a French engraver who was nicknamed Little Bernard for the small size of his prints. A comparative glance to contemporary and more traditional copies of the Metamorphoses (see the previous and next page) will reveal just how elaborate and sophisticated Solomon’s work was. Each page contains an image that illustrates a different story, and each image is visually contained within an equally beautiful and distinct decorative border.
