Metamorphosis, 1517

This beautifully decorated 1517 edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses features many images and was printed in both black and red. In this example, all the images with sexual content have been censored by an anonymous reader. This act demonstrates that iconoclasm affected both religious and secular works. Here, the woodcut depicting the affair between the Sun and Leucothoe is censored with black ink.
