Io. Frobenius lectori S. Iacobus Faber Stapulensis in secu[n]da suarum in Paulum adnotationiu[m] aeditione, 1518
This title page of the second edition of Erasmus’s letters to Jacques Lefevre d’Estaple features an intricate but generic woodblock border around a substantial block of text. The unspecific woodblock was likely recycled and used for many other books.
Note that, like many early editions, the author’s name, while printed in capital letters and located centrally on the page, is buried within a substantial volume of text. This contrasts with the later editions of his texts (see the page Biblia sacra: utriusque testamenti, 1539 & Colloquia, 1699), which highlight Erasmus’s connection by displaying him prominently and visually.
